Brows don't turn colors when the right pigments are used

Brows turning unwanted shades of gray, red, or orange is a common concern among microblading clients. The good news is that with the right pigments and techniques, this can be prevented. In this blog, we’ll explore how the pigments I use, including PhiBrows and Tina Davies, are formulated to keep your brows looking natural and true to color over time.

🎨 What Causes Brows to Turn Gray, Red, or Orange?

Many clients worry that their microbladed brows will change color over time, but why does this happen?

Brows can turn gray, red, or orange due to poor-quality pigments that aren't properly balanced for your skin tone. This color shift happens when:

  • Cool undertones dominate, causing brows to turn gray or blue.

  • Warm undertones dominate, causing brows to turn red or orange.

This can also happen if the pigments used don’t contain color stabilizers to help them fade naturally and predictably.

🧪 What Are Color Stabilizers?

Color stabilizers are special ingredients added to pigments to ensure they fade naturally and evenly over time. They help prevent unwanted color shifts and keep your brows looking natural.

Stabilizers work by balancing the warm and cool tones in pigments to prevent:

  • Gray or blue brows (too many cool tones)

  • Red or orange brows (too many warm tones)

Without stabilizers, pigments can fade unpredictably, leading to unexpected color changes.

⚖️ What Does “High Pigment Load” Mean?

When we talk about high-quality pigments, you’ll often hear the term “high pigment load.” But what does this mean?

A high pigment load means the pigment contains more color particles and less liquid or binder. This results in:

  • Better retention – The pigment stays in the skin longer, requiring fewer touch-ups.

  • Longer-lasting color – Your brows fade more slowly and naturally.

  • True-to-tone fading – Pigments fade predictably without turning gray, red, or orange.

The pigments I use from PhiBrows and Tina Davies have a high pigment load, ensuring better results for my clients.

☀️ Why Do Some Pigments Break Down with UV Exposure?

UV exposure can cause certain pigments to degrade and fade faster. Yellow and red tones are more prone to this breakdown.

For example:

  • Yellow pigments can fade and leave behind cooler tones, causing brows to look gray or blue.

  • Red pigments can fade, making brows appear cooler over time.

To combat this, the pigments I use from PhiBrows and Tina Davies are formulated to be more UV-resistant by using inorganic pigments like iron oxides, which are more stable in sunlight.
